El Reno is a stirring historical saga sweeping from the Civil War, the western migration and the Great Oklahoma Run of 1889, the dawn of the new century, World War I, through the Dust Bowl and Depression. Told in flashback, El Reno follows three families through these great moments in our history. The reader will meet a wise old Cherokee and survivor of the Trail of Tears, a German cowboy who rides a bull instead of a horse and sees the West through the eyes of a mystic, three exotic visitors from the East, Indians, outlaws, beautiful women, former slaves, the Klu Klux Klan, Amelia Earhart, and many others. El Reno is laced with references to ancient and Western mythologies, and the careful reader will delight in these echoes of the universal. The final chapters tell of a strong woman’s Hero’s Journey to independence. A Reading Group Guide is included for insightful book club discussions. It’s a damn good read.

Kevin Evans, in his first book El Reno, aptly and vividly captures part of the American West through iconic characters over time, from the 1870's to present day, a bit like James Michener in his novels. Evans sets the story initially near Lebanon, Missouri, following independent, 16-year-old Robert Jennings on his solo journey through Indian Territory, and into north Texas. Four years later, Robert meets his wife-to-be, Ida Emma. Together, they eventually end up back in Indian Territory, just after the Land Rush. Evans brings the story forward, eventually to present day, even through the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma, using vivid description, powerful dialogue in dialect, and deep character development, drawing on strong symbolism of the hero's journey, a journey within all of us. This is a "must read" for everyone who relishes characters with tenacity and courage. Carolyn Elliott, retired English professorProduct details

El Reno edition by Kevin Evans Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I just finished El Reno...I enjoyed the Novel. I still live in Canadian County and was raised in El Reno, Oklahoma. Kevin L. Evans captured the spirit of the town, the land and the people living in it. I am a descendant of Newton Jasper Myers and our family has Newton's military separation papers and we hold them dear as a family heirloom. Newton and Carrie Myers did have a son who lived until his late 20's his name was Vachel "Curtis" Myers he had two sons one living to adulthood- Richard "Dick" Myers, Dick had several children however one of Dick's sons is Frank Myers. Frank Myers iis my paternal grandfather. Frank had 5 sons. The middle of the 5 sons is my father Mark Myers who still lives in El Reno today. Great read. Thanks! Jani Myers Jones
Excellent reading. The characters are fully fleshed out and the plot moves right along.
Great story. I learned much about the OK land runs and the effects on Native American and homesteading families. Very authentic and moving portrayals of heroic and flawed characters. Totally enjoyed Robert's fortuitous bet and the ride with Station to manhood in the West.
If you love a good story full of lovingly constructed characters and a strong sense of place, El Reno will resonate with you.
This historical novel takes place over a fascinating time in American history. It's beautifully written and engaging. You can readily identify with the characters, and the tapestry of their lives. It's a great read!
Great read. I live in Canadian County so it made it easy to picture the settings that take place. The characters were well developed. A great history lesson as well.
El Reno is a wonderfully written book I had trouble putting down. This book is rich in history about the old west, in particular Oklahoma and its Indian history, the big land rush and the dust bowl. The book tells the stories of the strong men and women in a particular family and the trials they faced. It’s also a love story. I enjoyed every moment of El Reno and highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed!
